Digital PTW System (ePTW)

Challenge

  • Large Permit Volumes Across Diverse Facilities and Agencies.

  • Approval Errors for Critical / High-Risk Activities

  • Numerous Communication Processes

  • Permit’s Two-page Limit Can’t Cover All Hazards/Control Measures

  • Manual Processes for Lost Permits, Permit Statuses, and Morning Meeting Summaries

  • No Knowledge Base Generated from Past Permits

The primary challenge was the wasted time during shutdowns, as workers were required to be on-site but were instead confined to office tasks.

An established leader in the wind turbine industry – CTF Nordex Acciona designs, manufactures, and sells powerful wind turbines for nearly all geographical locations globally.

The wind industry’s hazards vary widely, from climbing tall turbines to working in confined spaces. Offshore installations face additional dangers like rough seas. The whole lifecycle is laden with risks and continual interactions with the teams.

Such a diverse and varied slate of working scenarios kept the Nordex professionals and EHS

teams are busy keeping workers safe, keeping the company compliant, and obtaining and analyzing the performance metrics to allow the organization to report on and control the necessary risk factors.

Due to manual processes, the productivity of critical members of terminal staff could be impacted by the time taken, and the process carried safety and legal implications. With no centralized portal to monitor activity on site, it was challenging to ensure the safety and security of the site.

TECH EHS technical staff quickly addressed their need for an automated, web-based system to handle the permit workflows, from creation and approval to issues, expiry, and archiving.

Since 2018, Nordex professionals have relied on TECH EHS to enhance their digital capabilities. Initially adopting Contractor Management Software, they later implemented digital Permit-to-Work to streamline operations in the renewable energy sector.

As maintenance evolves, permit systems must keep pace with changing goals. Recognizing gaps in their system, Nordex experts sought improvements in their procedures for permit issuance. They recognized the risks of paper-based permitting, which can lead to a complacent “checkbox mentality” among workers, undermining critical thinking.

They often rush through a repetitive process, leading to a perception that permitting is meaningless, with Supervisors or Lead Operators risking errors. With regulations dictating signed permits for each task, managing over 100 permits daily became cumbersome. The paper-based process impacted productivity and safety, lacking centralized monitoring.

In February 2020, they approached TECH EHS for an automated permit system. TECH EHS responded with e-PTW, allowing custom forms, workflows, and approvals. After implementation, Nordex saw improved permit management. Safety professionals accessed data quickly, and mobile solutions streamlined operations. The mobile solution identified risk hazards and necessary precautions through handheld devices, emphasizing the task’s sensitivity.

The software rollout was swiftly completed within two weeks of initial contact.

Outcome

After implementing the system, Nordex professionals observed an improvement in its ability to manage their permit actions.

With TECH EHS e-PTW, safety professionals in Nordex were helpful in accessing the necessary data in times of need.

The major highlight was the time-cycle in which the whole software was rolled out – within two weeks from the mutual connection and interaction (a prototype discussion online),

TECH EHS completed the whole project. With UAT training delivered In February 2020, in March 2020, it went into production.
