The Challenge

Workplace incidents carry real safety lessons. But explaining what happened, how it happened, and what could have gone differently rarely lands well through a written report or a standard training slide.

A Novartis site in India, still under construction at the time, needed a clearer way to communicate an incident and the safety learnings that came with it. The goal wasn’t just to document the incident. Novartis wanted the sequence of events recreated visually and turned into something the workforce could actually use during safety communication. Other objectives were:

Objectives For This Project

  • Communicate the sequence of events and the causal factors behind the incident clearly.
  • Standardize safety communication across multiple projects and geographically dispersed teams.
  • Increase workforce engagement during toolbox talks, safety campaigns, and training sessions.
  • Create a reusable digital learning asset that supports long-term incident prevention.
  • Strengthen the broader safety culture alongside ongoing improvement initiatives.

Our Approach

TECH EHS built a customized Incident Recreation Video Film specifically for the Novartis India site. Rather than describing the incident, the team recreated it through visual storytelling, walking viewers through the sequence of events, the contributing factors, and the key safety considerations in a format designed to hold attention.

The content was built around the specific workplace scenario at the India site, with safety awareness, incident learning, and broader workforce communication in mind from the start.

From One Site to Global Reach

The India video wasn’t built with global distribution in mind, but that’s what happened next. Once completed, it began circulating across Novartis sites worldwide, showing that a site-specific incident could double as a safety learning resource for a much wider workforce.

That circulation opened the door for TECH EHS to work directly with other Novartis safety teams, and the project grew from there.

Expanding Across Regions

Following the India project, TECH EHS went on to work with Novartis teams in Austria and Singapore, developing customized Incident Recreation videos based on each region’s own workplace incidents and safety requirements. Every version stayed specific to its own incident and environment rather than reusing the India content.

Discussions are now ongoing with additional Novartis regional teams for similar EHS communication and incident recreation work.

Key Project Journey

Stage What Happened
India Site Customized Incident Recreation Video developed for a construction-stage site
Global Circulation The completed video spread across Novartis sites worldwide
Austria & Singapore Additional customized Incident Recreation Videos developed for regional Safety Teams
Further Regional Engagement Ongoing discussions with other Novartis teams for similar requirements

What the Project Demonstrates

  • Site-specific EHS content works. Training material built around actual workplace incidents, processes, hazards, and safety requirements resonates more than generic content.

  • Visual recreation makes complex incidents easier to discuss. Realistic sequences help viewers understand what happened without needing to interpret a written report.

  • A single-site video can scale. Content developed for one location can be adapted into a broader safety learning resource when the underlying lesson is relevant elsewhere.

  • Cross-regional collaboration is achievable. TECH EHS supported EHS communication needs across three Novartis regions, India, Austria, and Singapore, while keeping each video specific to its own context.

What Made This Scalable Across Regions

The Novartis engagement worked across three countries because the approach adapted to each site rather than reusing a single template. That meant:

  • Building each Incident Recreation Video around the actual incident and workplace conditions at that specific site, not a generic safety scenario.
  • Maintaining consistency in format and quality while adjusting content for different regional teams and workplace contexts.
  • Coordinating directly with multiple Novartis Safety Teams across regions rather than a single point of contact.

The Result

What began as a single-site requirement in India grew into a multi-region collaboration, with customized Incident Recreation Videos developed for Novartis teams in Austria and Singapore as well. The continued conversations with other Novartis regional teams point to how much potential visual, incident-based learning has as a practical tool for EHS communication across a global organization.
